Facts
According to the indictment from the Kosovo Special Prosecution Office, Murat Dernjani traveled to Turkey in 2013 with his wife and son, with the intention of joining the Islamic State (ISIS). He has remained in Syria until August 2017, when he withdrew from terrorist activities and surrendered to Turkish authorities, only to later return to Kosovo.
He is accused of having committed crimes in Iraq and Syria during the period 2014-2017.
Procedure
In January 2019, the Basic Court of Pristina sentenced Murat Dernjani to 5 years in prison for terrorism-related crimes.
On 4 July 2025, Murat Dernjani has been found guilty of crimes against humanity against girls from the Yazidi community in Syria and Iraq. For these crimes, including sexual violence and enslavement of women from this community, the Basic Court in Pristina sentenced him to 20 years in prison
