According to the indictment, Osama Krayem went to Syria in September 2014 to fight for the Islamic State (IS). On 24 December, a fighter jet belonging to the Royal Jordanian Air Force, went down in Syria. The pilot was captured by IS the same day near Raqqa, Syria. The suspect, armed and masked, together with others forced the pilot into a metal cage. The cage was subsequently set on fire by one of the co-perpetrators. The pilot could not escape or seek help and he died as a consequence of the fire.
Procedure
Osama Krayem was arrested in Belgium in April 2016.
In June 2022, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in France for helping plan the November 2015 Paris attacks. The following year, he was given a life sentence in Belgium for participating in the March 2016 bombings at Brussels’s main airport and on the metro system.
On 27 May 2025, Swedish prosecutors have indicted Osama Krayem for serious war crimes and terrorist crimes in Syria.
On 4 June 2025, his trial started before the Stockholm District Court.
On 31 July 2025, the Stockholm District Court convicted Osama Krayem for a grave war crime and a terrorist offense, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The District Court has also awarded each of the Jordanian pilot’s parents and siblings damages to the amount of 80 000 SEK (around 7200 EUR).
Osama Krayem is imprisoned in France for other offenses and is now in Sweden to attend his trial. He will remain in custody in Sweden until the verdict becomes final.
